Review: Not Afternoon Tea at OXO Tower Brasserie

OXO Tower Brasserie’s Children’s Not Afternoon Tea Keeps the Little Ones Sweet!

Whilst everyone else in London was battling the queues for the Natural History and Science Museums on the Thursday of the February half term holidays, I took the far more pleasant option of accepting to review the new Children’s Not Afternoon Tea at the OXO Tower Brasserie with my two sons.

Following the success of their Not Afternoon Tea, OXO Tower Brasserie recently launched their kid’s version, a clever step to ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy what is essentially a rather fabulous plate of desserts. And considering that most children adore a sweet treat or three, this was always going to be a winner.

We escaped the cold winds of the riverside and headed up to the 8th floor of the iconic OXO Tower to be greeted by the lovely team at the Brasserie. The views over London from our table were breath taking with a bird’s eye vista of the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral particularly eye catching. More about that dome later!

If you’re expecting sandwiches, scones and cakes then this isn’t the place for you. It is the NOT Afternoon Tea after all. But if you love your desserts then you will simply adore this experience as will your children. The little ones can choose between the Chocolate Plate and the All About British Puddings Plate, each accompanied by a drink as well. My two both opted for the Chocolate Plate – no surprises there – and were presented with a trio of the most mouth watering desserts. The chocolate clementine mousse was the big hit swiftly followed by the walnut brownie but that’s not to say the chocolate chip biscuits were not welcomed with open mouths too. The vanilla malt mocktail served in a cute bottle with (paper)straw washed everything down perfectly. A tip for parents – make sure your children have eaten a good lunch beforehand though, this is purely a dessert. Otherwise I can guarantee you they’ll start on your plate of goodies too!

Although primarily invited to OXO Brasserie to review the Children’s Not Afternoon Tea, it would be wrong of me not to give the adults option a mention, awfully wrong of me. I opted for the London NOT Afternoon Tea and the London Markets Plate, a superb choice if I say so myself! And back to the dome of St Paul’s – the first part of this amazing culinary experience is the most stunning chocolate covered dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, revealing a delicious raspberry flavoured marshmallow interior. I would have eaten every morsel if the boys hadn’t helped me. Said dome cake was served with a gin cocktail, the perfect match, served in a cute tin can. We had fun trying to guess what the tin can had contained before being transformed into a cocktail holder. Kids- there’s a game in everything isn’t there!

My London Markets Plate was divine, every bit of it. Chocolate rose tart with candied flowers, coriander and lime leaf chocolate mousse and white chocolate ice cream with spiced chocolate crumble and punk chocolate shards were all delicious, but my favourite had to be the salted peanut caramel ganache with petticoat tails. I could have eaten that all day long (although my teeth would probably have dropped out by now as it was ridiculously sweet!). A Ziggy Stardust rum cocktail to accompany really did bring out some colour in my cheeks.

To round off, a pot of tea was served and considering my two boys love tea, I asked for two extra tea cups so that we could all enjoy a sip. Chocolates accompanied, followed by the most adorable of gifts to take home. A handmade “Mind the Gap” biscuit and a pretty black OXO Brasserie box containing an assortment of handmade sweets and chocolates designed around cockney rhyming slang. Brilliant and the perfect gift to take home for their Nanna who is a true cockney after all!

Next time you’re planning a trip to London in the school holidays and don’t fancy spending half a day in museum queues, take the kids along to the OXO Tower Brasserie and spoil them and yourself.
