One Aldwych, London, WC2B 4BZ
Hit London musical Charlie & the Chocolate Factory may now have moved on from its home at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, but One Aldwych and it’s Charlie inspired “Scrumdiddlyumptious Afternoon Tea” continues to attract a multitude of customers.
Located in a prime spot on the edges of Covent Garden, just at the top end of The Strand, One Aldwych is a stunning London hotel. Occupying the impressive triangular shaped Edwardian building that sits just opposite the entrance to Waterloo Bridge, One Aldwych is one of the capital’s finest independent hotels. The former home of The Morning Post back in 1901, it is now home to 105 beautiful guest rooms and suites as well as some of the area’s most delectable dining destinations.
The hotel is a stunning setting and is famed for its private art collection of which there are over 400 pieces. It is also renowned for housing some of the most beautiful floral displays in London, all created by the very talented in-house florist Mark Siredzuk. There can be no better location for afternoon tea in the capital.
Afternoon tea at One Aldwych is an award-winning affair and one of the most popular themed afternoon teas in London. So much so that their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired afternoon tea has stayed long after the famous musical at nearby Theatre Royal on Drury Lane came to a close, such is its popularity.
Amusingly named the Scrumdiddlyumptious Afternoon Tea, One Aldwych’s delightful afternoon tea offering is as refreshingly witty as Roald Dahl himself, reflecting the perfect eccentricity of one of Britain’s most loved children’s authors. Step into this magical world of fabulous flavours with a wonderful display of savoury options that include smoked salmon with chive crème fraiche on poppy seed bread or caramelised onion, sage and chestnut quiche. Sweet treats are a wonder to behold, particularly the golden chocolate egg filled with the most delicious vanilla and mango cheesecake or the bubble gum pannacotta that is so light it’ll almost have you float into the air much like dear old Violet Beauregarde. The homemade candy floss is an utter delight and if you think this is one for the kids, then think again when you take a sip on your glass of Lallier Grande Reserve Champagne. This is afternoon tea for the big kids (although the little ones will love it too!).
