The Connaught dates back to 1815 and boasts a rich and exciting history and heritage. Highlights include General Charles de Gaulle’s stay back in 1940, when it is said he met with allied commanders at a location nearby to discuss the strategy of the D-Day landings whilst various royal visitors have stayed there throughout the years. Ralph Lauren was so impressed with the sweeping staircase at The Connaught when he stayed there he created a replica of it in his New York flagship store.

The afternoon tea menu at The Connaught is a work of culinary genius, fusing the classic and contemporary together to perfection. Classic afternoon tea finger sandwiches are given a twist of South East Asia with cucumber with a hint of lime and mint, ham and cheese with miso mustard on walnut bread and smoked salmon with chipotle. As for the cakes, you’ll find the dreamlike flavours of lemon and thyme mousse with honeycomb and Chantilly cream, apricot Tatin with verbena mousse and shortbread and strawberry pavlova an absolute delight to taste and a perfect picture to look at. Chocolate fondue with animal shaped shortbread adds a touch of fun to proceedings as does the candyfloss, carefully spun by the waiter as a parting gift. Homemade English scones arrive warm and are accompanied by Cornish clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd whilst the choice of teas is excellent, from fragrant blacks to artisan options from small plantations in Japan and China.
