The Afternoon Tea Online team were invited to try out the new Valentines Afternoon Tea at the Bloomsbury Hotel. It certainly didn't take long to fix up a date as the Bloomsbury Hotel is one of our favourite destinations. Only a short walk from Tottenham Court Road tube station and very close to the British Museum, the Bloomsbury Hotel is a great venue for taking time out on a visit to London.

Afternoon tea takes place just inside the hotel adjacent to the lobby and the area is a well suited to couples and larger groups, with the latter having the big, comfy sofas at the far end. We visited on a Saturday lunchtime so the afternoon tea session had only just started but there were still a dozen or so couples taking afternoon tea.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of the new Champagne whilst we perused the tea menu. We opted for the Wild Rooibos, a real favourite of ours, rich and malty with great deep fruit flavours alongside a much lighter Lemon Verbena which is renowned for its health benefits. Both arrived in really sold silver teapots. We love the teapots!

The afternoon tea is as you would expect from the Bloomsbury Hotel. The scones were fabulous, coupled with the clotted cream and strawberry jam. We were even given an option of which jam but we're sure they were all great!

The finger sandwiches were split as one of our party is vegetarian and although we only informed the waitress on arrival, this was not a problem at all. The non-vegetarian options also included a delightful mini Mince Beef pie, which was gorgeous. The greedy amongst us could probably have eaten half a dozen or more!

When taking afternoon tea, the pastries always take centre stage and the Bloomsbury Hotel is no different. Our favourite was an absolutely delicious lemon drizzle cake and believe us, this really is lemon flavoured, wonderful! Other highlights included the caramel creme brulee and a rather tasty walnut and coffee slice.

The Bloomsbury Hotel really is a good choice for afternoon tea and the latest Valentine's Afternoon Tea is most definitely worth a look. The Perrier-Jouet 'Lovestruck' Champagne Afternoon Tea is priced at £40.00 per person and is available from 12th to 14th February.

Early History of Tea

According to legend, Shennong, one of the renowned Three Emperors of ancient China, was banished to the south of the country after being overthrown. In a state of poverty he was forced to drink hot water and legend states that one day a gust of wind blew leaves from a nearby tree into his pot of boiling water.
